Fire pit garden

Contemporary family garden

Location: Watford

THE BRIEF:

Our clients had finished a extensive renovation and extension to their home and now turning their attention to the garden, to reflect the style of the home, taking their living space outdoors  and blending the boundaries between inside and out – hope to tempt the children away from their screens!

The Design Brief  included the wish for generous seating both to relax and dine to be able to indulge in her passion for growing edibles, a green house and possibly cold frames, both to be  easily accessible from the house – our client didn’t want to have to march down the garden to tend to seeding and produce in the green house, the sound of running water was also added to the list, as well  generous lawns, colourful planting, to include places for the two Acers, which where anniversary presents to each other.

We were asked to create a garden to chill out in for all the family to enjoy.

THE STARTING POINT:

The house had had a large extension added, with lovely wide glass doors looking out onto the garden.  A solution would need to be found  to deal with a drop down from house to ground level of around 1m to give a comfortable and enjoyable journey down to the garden.

The garden was divided, by an high overgrown hedge, and self sown Silver Birch trees to side of the garden made the area nearest the house feel quite claustrophobic and dark.  Beyond the hedge was an overgrown area full of self seed large trees.

THE TRANSFORMATION:

Once the  large large dominant hedge and some of the trees in the centre of garden had been removed and the  silver birches had been thinned to leave the most stunning ones as focal points amongst the deep border the garden was really opened up and the sun streamed in, transforming the previously rather dark and forbidding space into a light filled garden, waiting to be transformed.

My clients can now push back the bi-fold doors and step out on a sleek, spacious sunny deck, surrounded by planting they can relax on enjoying the sunshine before stepping down to a dining area, set off by a lovely contemporary water feature.

The sleek contemporary Green house has been placed to one side of the garden, keeping it out of the dirt line of vision and is only  a few steps away from the house, the lovely cold frames, built of brick to match the house and with frames that echo the colour and style of windows and doors has been tucked up agains the house, allowing our Client to indulge her passion a few steps from the back door.

Set further down the garden, partially hidden by trees and planting a fire pit and bench, make a lovely destination to sit and enjoy the garden after dark, or when a bit nippy, to toast both you toes and marshmallows by the warmth of the fire.

Generous lawns and pride of place for the 2 lovely Acers, made this a fabulous garden that the family can enjoy through out the year.
