THE STARTING POINT:

The really pretty Arts & Craft style house was hidden behind tall very fat hedges,  bulging over the path leading to the front door.  The  brick wall boundary wall along the front of the garden and beneath the hedge was in bad repair.  A mix if block paving and crazy paving had been used for drive and paths, was looking tired and had become uneven over time.

Planting consisted of some lawn surrounded by narrow dated borders with a few roses and not much else, so it lacked year round interest.

Access to the drive was very narrow, making it difficult to drive on and off, and they often had to move the cars when one or other  want to use their car.

They had also recently had a socket  fitted for an EV car and needed to have better access to it.

THE TRANSFORMATION:

The hedges were removed to reveal the lovely house and replaced with a warm red brick wall, divided by brick pillars to reinforce the style.  Designed to recreate the original style of walls and include decorative black metal panels between them,  a nod back to the original cast iron railing that would have adorned them originally before being removed to help the WW2 war effort.

Visitors are now drawn up through the formally set out front garden, along  the lovely Victorian style tiled path to the front door.  The tiles having been chosen to contain blues that match perfectly the colour of the front door.

The area in front of the house was transformed into a formal Arts and Style garden with a grid of beds each planted identically to further emphasise the formality.

Our clients are now able to drive on and off their drive with ease through the widened entrance, to park next to each other.  By taking the boundary between front and back gardens back, their EV car can easily be parked to charge and there is even space for visitors to park on the drive too.

It was a joy to creates design for this garden taking it back to its’ Arts and Crafts roots, whilst ensuring it meets  the 21st Century needs of our clients.
