THE STARTING POINT
The garden was largely laid to lawn, with a range of island like beds cut into the grass, a terrace jutted out from the house, the width of the bi-fold doors, crammed with our clients furniture as it was the only place to put it. It made moving from house to garden awkward, navigating around the table and chairs and also blocked views out to the garden.
To the side of the house was an area with some broken down brick raised beds, a path leading to the front garden and access to the detached garden
THE TRANSFORMATION
To deal with the change in level from the house – by stepping out onto a generous platform, with space to bring a chair outside to enjoy the sunshine. Raised beds brought the plants right up to the house and wide shallow steps transport you down to the garden.
Generous terraces for dining and relaxing are placed on either side of the garden, to create easy and open access to the rest of the garden and ensuring that the views of the garden from the house could be enjoyed.
To one side the dining terrace steps down from the platform and then down to the garden, this too has raised beds at the edges, creating a unified look, creating a shady space to enjoy al fresco dining.
A lovely terrace placed to catch the sun is placed on the other side of the garden, with plenty of space for comfortable inviting sofas and shaded, when needed by contemporary steel pergola. Nearby is a modern water feature set into an oval gravel bed, plants, softening the gravel and our clients’ collection decorative spheres.
A generous elliptical lawn is edged by a wide strip of dark grey clay pavers that contrast beautifully with the pale grey porcelain used for the paving elsewhere in the garden. The pavers not only ensure that the crisp elliptical shape of the lawn is not lost over time and also serves as a path, providing a lovely journey around the garden and linking up zones around the garden, allowing you to stroll around the garden, to admire the planting close up on the way to work or work out in the garden office or to the very productive vegetable plot before making your way back to the sofas for a rest.
Truly a garden that allows our clients to work, rest, play and entertain in a beautiful contemporary setting.
